On June 1, 2018, Scottsboro proudly became the 22nd designated Main Street Alabama community. Main Street Alabama, an affiliate of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, has been revitalizing downtown districts across the state for over thirty years. Each year, the organization selects three new communities to join its network. In 2018, South Huntsville, Foley, and Scottsboro were chosen.
Scottsboro’s application was bolstered by approximately seventy-five letters of support, showcasing a solid grassroots movement that impressed local leaders. The community demonstrated the capacity to sustain the program and effectively utilize its assets, making their application stand out. With this designation, Downtown Scottsboro can access Main Street Alabama’s design and historic preservation expertise, planning, economic development, organizational management, and training. This grassroots network comprises small towns, mid-sized communities, and urban commercial districts, all working together to enhance their downtown areas.
First Monday Trade Day in Scottsboro began as Horse Swapper’s Day on December 1, 1902, thanks to James Armstrong, editor of The Scottsboro Citizen. Armstrong proposed a monthly event for trading horses, and while the first event was modest, his persistence paid off. By 1903, the event was gaining traction, with a growing crowd and successful trades.
As times changed and fewer people needed to swap horses, the event evolved. After Armstrong’s passing in 1911, the new editor, James S. Benson, rebranded it as Market Day in 1925, inviting local farmers to trade a variety of goods.
Today, First Monday has transformed into a vibrant Trade Day, now held on Saturdays, with themes like salsa competitions and parades to attract visitors. This cherished tradition continues to adapt, celebrating the spirit of community and commerce. We invite you to explore the treasures our vendors have to offer around the courthouse square and enjoy the lively atmosphere!
Special thanks to Ann Chambless for her research on this beloved event.
